Suede and Chrome Extra: September in the Midwest

Wow...fall is without a doubt my favorite time of year!
1) Perfect weather
2) Leaves begin to change in the Midwest.
3) College, NFL, and Fantasy football leagues beginning.
4) Major League baseball and NASCAR climaxing.
5) School is back in full swing.
6) Halloween and Thanksgiving just around the corner
7) Lots and Lots of area car shows and cruise-ins!!!

Looking at my calendar this morning, I realized that I've got plans for some major shows for the next 3 weekends! This Saturday, there is a local show about a mile from my house. The ME Zoo in Parker City, Indiana hosts an annual show to raise money to feed and maintain the animals. This could be the last year for the show, as the zoo is looking for a buyer. If no one buys the zoo, it will most likely close. The ME Zoo show is from 9 am til 2 pm. After the zoo, I plan to drive the Nifty Fifty up to Greenville, Ohio. The Rolling 50s car club puts on an annual show on the streets of downtown Greenville. Typically, there are 400 - 500 cars in attendance. The show starts at 2 pm and runs til 9 pm with several merchants along Broadway staying open with special hours the night of the show.

The following weekend, The Rebel Run in Lima, Ohio takes place. If memory serves me, this show actually started as a "break-away" show from the James Dean Festival. The show moved from Fairmount, Indiana to Muncie, Indiana, then moved again several years ago to the Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio. The show is always held the weekend before the James Dean Festival. There is a paid admission for spectators, but the show attracts thousands of cars every year. It's become one of my favorite events. The show usually has a good mix of hot rods, trailer queens, traditional hot rods, and rat rods. It also has a decent swap meet area. My son likes the engine rapping and flame-throwing contests, both held on Saturday. We started a tradition last year of getting some hamburgers at Kiwpees, a local chain that's been making burgers since the 1940s.

The weekend of September 25-27 the annual James Dean Festival takes place in Fairmount, IN. Along with the James Dean Festival, the Ducktail Run occurs in at the same time in neighboring Gas City, and I believe there is a bike show in another neighboring 'burg the same weekend also. You just can't beat the James Dean/Ducktail Run. One of the best shows in the Midwest. Admission to both is free for spectators. Big Swap meet area and occasionally you can find some good deals on parts, projects, etc.

The end of September will bring a few more area events that I like to attend. I'm not sure of the dates yet, but there is a good show in Fort Recovery, Ohio and one in Bradford, Ohio every fall. I think I might even have the wife talked into heading down to Bowling Green, KY. in October for the Goodguys event. Shoot....before you know it, it will be time for the Detroit Autorama again....Life is Good, get out and enjoy it!
