Wilbur Wright Show Post #3

Harold Roberts brought his beautiful 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup to the show.
Another happy door prize winner with a socket set. (note in the background, even my youngest boys got "into" the show with their pedal cars. Guess it pays to know someone in the host club!)
My neighbors Dave and Tammy Hernly brought their 1941 pearl white Chevy Sedan to the show. Dave entertained the crowd with a "grass donut". Dave did you REALLY not think it was "that wet"? :)
Charles Pierce brought his 1971 Chevrolet El Camino to the show.
Although Righteous Rodders club member Ben Shamy took home a Top 10 with his SS Chevelle last year, he chose to debut his 1968 Chevy Nova this year. Someone told me he was afraid it might rain and his Chevelle would get wet! Too funny Ben!
This year's most appreciative Top 10 award winner went to Larry Baker with his 1996 GMC. When his wife accepted the award, she was overjoyed! She said Larry had put a lot of hard work into the truck. It looks great Larry!

2009 Wilbur Wright Show Post #2

Thanks to a GENEROUS Bill Winger of Daddy Katz in Kettering, Ohio, several individuals got to take home some kool DaddyKatz swag. EVERY registered car owner received a goodie bag filled with kool stuff from several sponsors!
Wayne Fickert drove his Satellite 82 miles from Rockfort, Ohio to be at the show. For his effort, he took home the Farthest Traveled Trophy.
Chuck Glenn only had to bring his 1974 Roadrunner from Winchester, Indiana to claim a Top 10 Trophy. His buddies seemed to think he is a bit of a "trophy hound", but we're glad he brought his gorgeous Plymouth to the show again this year.

Eugene and Linda Miers brought their maroon and silver 1946 Dodge pickup to the show.

Suede and Chrome Extra: Thank You!!!!

Wow! Can you believe it? This blog will surpass 50,000 hits today! Just a little "Shout Out" to all the faithful readers of Suede and Chrome...You have made it very enjoyable for me to share my "passion" over the past couple of years! Here's to the next 50,000!!!

p.s...Speaking of things I can't believe....my oldest daughter turns 16 today...Yikes!

2009 Wilbur Wright Birthplace Festival

Well, the Righteous Rodders hosted their first show, and it was a SUCCESS! Thanks to everyone who support our efforts! We had close to 50 cars, trucks and motorcycles at the event.
All of the comments I received from participants about our "home-built" trophies were very positive. Thanks to Jim Canfield and his sons Josh and Jimmy for the donation of the 16 pistons and rods. They also did an OUTSTANDING job on the chrome-plating!!!! (it pays to have club members that have their own plating biz!) Also thanks to Mike Hagy for donating the wood and use of his woodworking shop for the construction of the bases. Club member Bill Ridge did most of the assembly work....they turned out GREAT! We are already kicking around some ideas for next year's trophies. If you have any ideas, let me know.
Although my "taste" is traditional hotrods and ratrods, our show was open to all years, makes and models. Its always interesting to see who will show and what they will bring. The Oldest Vehicle Trophy this year went to the 1928 Ford Sedan owned by Don Spell from Mooreland, Indiana. Don dropped it off early, went home and brought back a 1953 Chevrolet Convertible. Thanks Don for bringing both cars to the show!
Harold Thomas from Springport, IN showed up in this little Mustang.
Rich Young of Connersville took home a Top Ten Trophy with this sweet looking two-tone pickup truck.
Dennis Gipe of Mt. Summit, Indiana brought his little green Super Beetle back to the show again this year. He told me he is interested in selling it, so if anyone is interested....it's a well restored little bug. (fact is my youngest daughter thinks its pretty kool. Good thing my older daughter who just turned 16 is "into Camaros and Mustangs. or is that a good thing @ 16 when dad's paying the insurance?)
Steve and Linda Brown drove to the show from nearby Middletown, Indiana. Middletown is hosting the 2009 Middletown Car Fest on Saturday, August 8th in downtown Middletown. I've been told that last year there were over 85 cars at the event. I may have to try to make it over there this year.

Suede and Chrome Shout Out!

Thought I'd give a "Suede and Chrome Shout Out" to a member of our club the "Righteous Rodders". Josh has a kool 1948 Chevrolet 2-door Sedan that he hopes to have on the road by next year.
His car is a true barn find. The body is very straight for a vehicle of it's age, but unfortunately the interior has played host to a few small mammals over the years and the engine is stuck.

Josh recently found this 1946 Chevrolet 3-door "donor car", and I stopped by the other day to check it out. Although the exterior has seen a better day, don't let it fool you. The previous owner had done a great deal under the hood including an engine overhaul and all new vintage wiring, fuel lines, and brake lines. Josh actually gave me a "Righteous Rodders" ride around the barnyard in this vintage machine! (Too bad no cameras caught the action!)

Josh plans to use the 2 cars to make one. Can't wait to get it in the "Righteous Rodder" corral! Good Luck Josh! Keep me posted on the build!

Suede and Chrome Extra: Pics from Scruffy's Vacation in South Carolina

O.k....I know, few people like to sit around and look at someone else's vacation pictures. So I will not bore you with all of them. But I did want to share a few kool shots that I took on a recent family trip to South Carolina. The picture above of the kool Ford Panel truck was taken during a walk around the area one afternoon. This is the shop truck for a cool little bike shop. The guy carries all sorts of bikes including beach cruisers, bmx, mountain bike and retro cruisers.
Here are a couple of kool shots of the Cooper River Bridge (Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge) that connects Mt. Pleasant to Charleston. It was finished only a few years ago. We've been vacationing in the Charleston area every year for 20+ years. This thing is INCREDIBLE compared to the 2 bridges it replaced. Learn more about the bridge at: http://www.cooperriverbridge.org/

The following picture is the exterior view of one of my favorite area restuarants. California Dreaming is right on the Marina and has a beautiful view from inside. Learn more about the place at: http://www.centraarchy.com/californiadreaming_Chas.php

O.k....not sure if the color of this beach rental is "kool", but it is definitely unique. This picture was taken on the beach on the Isle of Palms. We used to rent a beach house (not nearly as nice as this one!) until hurricane Hugo came through. After the "rebuild" it is much cheaper for us to rent a Mainstay Suite (with all of my kids) for the week.

I usually try to get out and check out the antique places on one afternoon during the week. I like to look for fifties and sixties stuff. One of my favorite places "Hungryneck Antiques" added a little glass enclosure in front of the store since I visited last year. This is a picture of the kool roadster pickup housed inside. I only wish the doors were unlocked so I could have gotten a closer look!

The next series of pictures are taken at another one of my favorite restaurants. We found this kool place on Daniel Island last year. Named "Queen Anne's Revenge" after Blackbeard's ship, this restuarant houses the owner's personal collection of authentic pirate artifacts from the Carolina area. You can learn more about the place by visiting: http://www.qarevenge.com/

It was hard to get clear pictures through the display glass of some of these artifacts. Nonetheless, I hope you can see that there is a lot of kool stuff at this place.

Well, I certainly apologize for anyone that was disappointed looking through some of my vacation shots. I've got a few more pictures to post in the next day or so from the Road Rocket Rumble, then I'll be posting from a few area events.
A couple of noteworthy bits:
The Nifty Fifty won 2 top 20 trophies in a couple of area events last weekend. These are her first!
I've invested in the future of this webpage today. As of today, I broke down and bought a .com and invested in some more picture storage. Doing this, I hope to insure that I can keep adding to this site for years to come!
Have a great week!
Keep On Roddin'
